Awards & Research Funds

THE GEOLOGISTS' ASSOCIATION ADMINISTERS A NUMBER OF FUNDS AND AWARDS

The Geologists’ Association provides a number of grants that are open to both members and non-members and designed to promote the highest quality research projects and wide dissemination.  Eligible applications are judged on the basis of (i) scientific excellence; (ii) financial need and (iii) value for money.

STANDARD AWARDS
The Geologists’ Association New Researchers’ Scheme

Deadline: 20th June 2009 (this year only)
thereafter 15th February and 15th September annually

New Researchers' application formNew Researcher's Scheme application form

The GA New Researchers’ Scheme is designed for new or younger researchers in any relevant field of earth sciences. Applicants must be registered for either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree and must have been a GA Member for at least 6 months by the time of application. A more limited amount of funding is available for non-members through the Middlemiss bequest. Applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree or a tenured academic position. Preference will be given to those who have no other source of funding or whose access to such funds is limited. Typical awards are to support field expeditions, geological surveys, visits to laboratories and laboratory analyses. Please note that we are not able to accept applications for radiocarbon dates. A letter of support from the applicant’s dissertation or PhD supervisor must accompany the application. Grants are normally for sums up to £600. Successful applicants will be expected to submit a brief report (500-800 words) for publication in the Magazine during the 12 months following expenditure of the grant. Applicants are encouraged to submit full-length articles to Proceedings of the Geologists’ Association, which will be subject to the normal refereeing procedure for papers. Applicants submitting full-length articles are not required to submit the brief report in addition.

Note: This fund will incorporate the Middlemiss bequest (to support students undertaking geological fieldwork, with a particular preference to work on the Cretaceous), which is also open to non-members.

Completed application forms should be submitted as hard copies and/or electronically to Mrs Sarah Stafford, the Geologists’ Association, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1V 9AG; E-mail: geol.assoc@btinternet.com

The Geologists’ Association Research Awards

thereafter 15th February and 15th September annually

Research Award application formResearch Award application form

The GA Research Awards are available to all members of the Geologists’ Association of at least one year's standing, irrespective of age and status, to foster research in any area of earth sciences. A more limited amount of funding is also available to non-members through the G.W. Young and Baker-Arber funds. Grants will normally be for sums up to £600 and can be used for any scientific purpose deemed suitable by the Awards Committee. Typical claims might be to support fieldwork or museum visits (travel and subsistence costs), purchase laboratory consumables (although not major pieces of equipment) or pay for radiometric dating (although applications for radiocarbon dates are normally expected to be routed through NERC). Please note that we do not generally fund labour costs or salaried posts.

Note: This fund will incorporate the G.W. Young Fund and the William Baker-Muriel Arber Fund (to provide grants towards the investigation of important or scientifically interesting geological sections), which are also open to non-members.

Completed application forms should be submitted as hard copies and/or electronically to Mrs Sarah Stafford, the Geologists’ Association, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1V 9AG

Geologists' Association
Awards

The Geologists' Association makes awards for two reasons, to provide funding for small projects carried out by individuals and groups through the Curry Fund, and to recognise the contributions of earth scientists through its prizes and medals.

General rules and procedures (for all awards)

  1. No more than one award in all categories will be made to an individual member in any one calendar year (see also note 7 below).
  2. All applications will be considered by a panel drawn from Council.
  3. Applications for all awards can be submitted at any time and will be considered by the Awards Panel as follows:
    • Standard grants: twice a year (deadlines are 15th February and 15th September except in 2009, when there will be a single deadline of 20th June)
    • Prize nominations: once a year (deadlines vary according to prize)
  4. Results of each grant round will normally be available within 1 month of the deadline.
  5. The GA will not consider retrospective applications, i.e. to support activities that will already have occurred prior the deadline date.
  6. Successful applicants who do not provide the written reports requested cannot be considered for future awards until their reports have been received.
  7. Where indicated in their award letter, successful applicants must submit a written report (suitable for publication in the Magazine) and/or a statement of expenditure, by a specified deadline.
  8. No further applications will be considered until 12 months have elapsed from the time of receipt of written reports and/or statements of expenditure.

The financial support from the GA should be acknowledged in any publication, poster or presentation arising from funded activities.
