Schools Poster Competition
PRIMARY SCHOOLS' POSTER COMPETITION
'Rockwatch' is running a schools' poster competition for the
'Festival of Geology' being held on Saturday 1st November 2008
at University College London.
What is Urban Geology?
It is all around us. Everything we need and use in our daily
lives that we cannot grow, has to be dug out of the ground.
And, it is geologists who discover where to find the raw materials
we use for making our lives more comfortable. Geology underpins
a vast range of human activity such as - where to get water,
where to dump waste, how to control landslips and floods, where
to build and what building materials to use. Geology is the
key for understanding the past, the present and even the future,
of planet Earth. Our geological heritage is a unique resource
that we should value and conserve now and for future generations
to experience, learn from and enjoy.
The Competition
Design an A3 sized poster, use any medium and you can combine
both illustration and text. The best posters are eye catching
and present a strong image portraying a clear message. For
more advice, why not talk to your art teacher? The judges will
be looking for a poster promoting the theme of 'Urban Geology' and demonstrating an awareness of the geology around us, its
importance in our daily lives and the need to value and conserve
our geological heritage for present and future generations.
Entries will be judged in the 4 year groups: Year 3, 4, 5 and
6 (age at 10th October 2008). The winning entry from each year
will receive a £100 cheque
and a 1 year subscription to 'Rockwatch'.
Competition Rules
- Closing date for the competition is
10th October, 2008
- Only one entry per class.
- The organisers cannot accept responsibility
for entries lost or damaged in the post.
- A signed entry form
must be securely attached to the back of each entry.
- The judges'
decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
- Winners will be notified
on Monday 20th October.
- Winning posters will be on display
and prizes will be presented at the Festival of Geology at
University College London on 1st November, 2008.
- Photographs of the winning
entries may be published in both the Rockwatch and Geologists'
Association magazines.
- We regret that entries cannot be returned
unless accompanied by return postage.
